National Special Education Day

On December 2 we celebrate National Special Education Day and say THANK YOU to our special education teachers, service providers, paraprofessionals, administrators, parents, guardians, and community partners who support and empower our students each day. We appreciate you!

Special Education Day commemorates the signing into law of the “Education for All Handicapped Children Act,” now known as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) on November 29, 1975.

The IDEA was our nation's first federal special education law, which ensures free and appropriate public education (FAPE) and related services to all eligible children with disabilities across the nation. The signing of the IDEA was a critical and necessary step toward making education and resources equitable for all children.

Since 1975, our nation has progressed from excluding nearly 1.8 million children with disabilities from public schools to providing special education and related services to more than 8 million children with disabilities.

Please join us in recognizing our Special Education staff and teams!
