► The executive functioning strategy/skill highlighted this week is organization.

Below are some strategies from thepathway2success.com that parents can use at home to help their children build skills.

Organization is developing and maintaining a system to stay neat and tidy. Learners might need organization skills to keep binders and supplies tidy. They also use organization when putting their ideas together before starting a project. Organization is also critical beyond school for keeping our homes neat and having systems in place to help us complete work efficiently.

Some strategies for organization at home include:

  • Organize a room. Choose one room or area of the house and organize it together. Doing an organization project together makes it considerably more manageable for everyone involved. You can even listen to music while you clean to make it more fun.
  • Sort and tidy. Choose something that could be sorted, such as a pile of clothes or a stack of books. Discuss how they can be sorted and work it out together.
  • Model the creation of task lists or a system of labeling to-do items by using systems such as Sarah Ward’s “Get ready, Do, Done.

Raising multilingual or bilingual children: Practical tips for supporting your child’s multilingual or bilingual development

Play and games

  • Read and tell stories in your heritage language, and encourage your child to join in. Use dress-ups and be creative!
  • Play games in your heritage language, especially games that focus on language, like "I spy," bingo, "Who am I?" and memory.
  • Sing songs, dance and play music in your heritage language. Children love music, and melody is a great way to help them remember things.
  • Look for child-friendly word game apps in your heritage language.

Community activities

  • Look for schools, child care centers, playgroups or multilingual and bilingual programs that support your child’s use of their heritage language.
  • Organize playtime with other children who speak the same heritage language.
  • Organize visits to or from speakers of your heritage language. Visit libraries or museums dedicated to your culture
  • Go to the library and borrow CDs, DVDs, picture books, age-appropriate fiction and magazines in your heritage language.
  • Look for cultural activities that you and your child can do together to tap into your family’s cultural heritage and identity.

At home

  • If possible, talk to your children in your heritage language from birth.
  • Listen to radio programs in your heritage language, including popular music programs and channels for teenagers.
  • If you have family and friends who live overseas, you could encourage your children to connect with them using video-chat or online.
  • Think about what your child is interested in – for example, soccer, music, TV shows, cooking and so on. Try incorporating your heritage language into these interests. For example, you could find your child’s favorite recipe or a typical recipe from your community and cook it together using only that language.
  • Watch movies or sport in your heritage language – for example, through satellite TV or online streaming services. You can sometimes switch the audio or subtitles of English content into other languages.

Red Ribbon Week

#Red Ribbon Week is an alcohol, tobacco, and other drug and violence prevention awareness campaign observed annually in October in the United States. It began as a tribute to fallen DEA special agent Enrique Camerena in 1985. According to the United States DEA, Red Ribbon Week is the nation's largest and longest-running drug awareness and prevention program. This year’s theme is Celebrate Life & Live Drug Free. Students participated in a variety of themed days this week and learned about the importance of staying drug free. The final activity was a door decorating contest with their advisory class! Special thanks to our SST team and advisors for supporting this important week!

Outdoor Recess Weather Reminders

#Students participate in outdoor recess throughout the school year, unless there is a significant weather-related or other external factor that necessitates an indoor program. Here at McCracken, we use the Child Care Weather Watch system to determine students’ participation in outdoor recess. This guide uses a combination of temperature and wind speed to calculate year-round weather safety for our students. Thank you, in advance, for helping to ensure that your child is prepared with appropriate outerwear for recess so that they are comfortable during our outdoor programming! Families in need of outerwear for their child should contact administration for additional resources.

Student Arrival and Dismissal Reminders

#

  • Please drive slowly and carefully when picking up or dropping off students.
  • 6th Grade parents dropping off by Door 12 should pull all the way over to the curb on the right and quickly and safely allow their child to exit the vehicle so other cars can continue to Circle Drive. Please use your hazards to alert cars behind you.
  • Please do not make U-turns on East Prairie. Use the McCracken Circle Drive to turn around.
  • Students cannot cross the Circle Drive in front of cars to get into a vehicle parked on the street. Drivers must pull into the Circle Drive to maintain safety and drop off in the right lane only.
  • Students must cross the intersection of Crawford and Oakton assisted by our crossing guards for their safety. Students are not allowed to cross East Prairie and Oakton without an adult before or after school.
  • Please be sure to communicate with your child about their after-school plans before school. Are they walking home, taking the bus, or staying after school for sports or a club?

McCracken Extracurricular Programming

#Here at McCracken, we are proud to offer a variety of student athletic and enrichment programs. These programs allow students to exercise their strengths, tackle areas of growth, and socialize with peers. Be sure to sign up your student for one of our great extracurricular activities clubs or activities! Review the Fall 2022 Extracurricular Slideshow (with videos and important links) and Brochure for information, registration links, and the payment link (for a small number of activities).

MIDDLETON NEWS

Author Visit

Middleton was so excited to welcome author Kekla Magoon. She was able to share her new book, Chester Keene Cracks the Code, as well as some information about how she uses the writing process to create her works. Thank you, Kekla Magoon, for visiting! A huge thank you to Middleton Librarian Beth Glaser for making this connection for our district.

November 15th: Picture Retake Day

Individual student pictures were sent home. Retakes are available on November 15th if you did not order pictures or would like your child to retake their pictures. Please return the old pictures to school before or on retake day. Order forms for new orders can be picked up in the Middleton office at any time. We can also send an order form home with your child if you call the office before retake day.

Teacher Feature

Ms. Barnold/Ms. Rosenfeld’s 1st grade class invited a grandparent to come read to them! A grandparent of a student read a nonfiction book about squirrels and then she led them through a craft where the students made paper bag squirrels and wrote a squirrel fact on the bag. Also, students experimented with tuning forks to learn more about waves traveling through the air, water, and other objects.

MEYER NEWS

Meyer Parent Leaders Updates

The Meyer Parent Leaders (MPL) meeting and Family Meet-Up in November have been canceled. The next MPL meeting will be Thursday, December 15th from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. We hope you will join us then!

Check out the MPL'S Facebook page or website for the most up-to-date information!

Meyer Friendship Week

#Next week, November 14th-18th, is Meyer’s Friendship Week! Friendship Week celebrates keeping old friendships and building new ones. Each kindergarten classroom has been matched up with one of our preschool classrooms for one Choice Time next week, so that new and old friends can play together in the classrooms.

Vision and Hearing Screenings

#The Meyer school nurse, Mrs. Katie Orleans, will be conducting hearing and vision screenings for all students at Meyer during the month of November. Parents will be notified only if results require a follow up with an outside healthcare professional.

Gratitude Tree

#Help us celebrate gratitude this month, by filling the Meyer Gratitude Tree! We sent home a leaf-shaped paper with your child, for them to write or draw what your family is thankful for. Send the leaf back to your child’s teacher, so that we can include this on our tree! If you need another leaf, please contact your child’s teacher or stop by the main office.

Dressing for Outdoor Recess

#As we head into colder temperatures, please send your child to school with appropriate outerwear, such as a warm jacket or coat, hat, gloves, and scarf. All students will need winter boots and snow pants when there is snow on the ground.

As long as it is not raining, we will go outside for recess. In general, if it "feels" like 15 degrees or above and it is not raining/snowing, we will go outside. Please see the Child Care Weather Watch chart that we use to guide our decisions.
