Dear Families and Staff:
We hope this message finds you enjoying these final days of summer! In a few short weeks, we will welcome students back into our schools for a new school year, and we could not be more excited. The purpose of this message is to share information about developments in our Extended Learning Program (ELP) for the 2024-2025 school year.
Skokie School District 73.5’s Extended Learning Program provides courses for students who demonstrate a need for a more rigorous and challenging learning experience that extends beyond the grade-level standards to support intellectual development, while recognizing the unique needs of these learners. The Extended Learning Program serves 4th through 8th grade for English Language Arts and Math. These are separate courses that are taught in replacement of the standard general education classes. In both courses, the curricular standards are compacted and accelerated.
- Rising 5th and 8th grade students whose spring MAP Math scores fall into the 93rd percentile or higher will be invited to enroll in ELP Math.
- At Middleton, we are adding an additional ELP Math class in 4th grade and 5th grade to create space for more students. Additionally, ELP students at Middleton will receive accelerated writing instruction from their homeroom teachers.
Should your student qualify for ELP based on the aforementioned change to qualification criteria, you will be contacted by your student’s school.
We strongly believe that all students deserve access to learning that supports them in reaching their highest level of growth. Therefore, the purpose of these developments is to open access to the rigorous learning offered in ELP to more students while maintaining our capacity to fully support them. Additionally, because these developments are controlled and manageable, we are empowered to monitor students’ experiences and gather valuable data that might inform our search for ways to further expand enrichment learning to more students in the future.
We are grateful for your unwavering support of your students and your partnership. Should you have any questions about ELP programming, please do not hesitate to contact your student’s school.
Sincerely,
Dr. Zipporah Hightower
