DISTRICT UPDATES
FACILITIES PLANNING ENGAGEMENT TEAM
Skokie School District 73.5 is addressing significant challenges posed by aging facilities that no longer meet our goals and needs. In response, we are developing a long-term facility improvement plan and need community input to help shape the future of our schools. It is important to have your voices and we invite you to learn more about the process. Please visit the the Facilities & Infrastructure Plan section of our website for more information and background documents.
The next community meeting is scheduled for Monday, October 28 from to 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in the McCracken Middle School Multipurpose Room. If you wish to attend, please reply via this form. Your attendance does not commit you to long-term participation. These meetings are an opportunity to connect with other community members and decide whether you are interested in supporting the district's facility improvement plan.
All who reside within the Skokie School District 73.5 boundaries are invited to join the discussion. Please share this information with your friends and neighbors who might be interested!
Thank you for considering. We look forward to your participation.

DISTRICT DATES
Last week, kindergartners visited Skokie Public Library’s Bookmobile here in the Meyer Drive-Thru. Ms. Lorrie gave kindergartners a tour of the bookmobile, showed them how to check out books, and read a story to each class. You can visit the Bookmobile when it is parked at any of its many stops, including McNally Park on Wednesdays from 3:15 to 4:00 p.m.!
SOCKTOBER
Socktober is coming to an end on Thursday, October 31! Thank you to all the families who have donated socks to go to the Niles Township Clothing Closet! If you have more pairs of new socks to donate, please have your child bring them into school. We will share our final count soon!
FALL CLASSROOM CELEBRATIONS
Meyer Shining Stars will have a fall celebration in their classrooms on Friday, November 22. Your child’s classroom teacher will provide more information about their plans for this celebration as the date approaches. Our district does not celebrate Halloween in an effort to be more inclusive and so that all students may participate in our celebrations. Students should not wear costumes of any sort on Halloween and will need to change out of them if they come to school in costume. Thank you for your support of our community, and for your help in making our district a welcoming and inclusive place!
EMERGENCY CLOTHING FOR FALL WEATHER
At the beginning of the school year, we asked every student to bring a complete spare set of clothing to keep at school in case of an emergency. With cooler weather upon us, the extra clothing in your child’s locker may no longer be warm enough for our current temperatures. Please send extra fall clothing, as needed, including a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, socks, and underwear, clearly marked with your child’s name. Thank you!

FEEDBACK SURVEY CLOSES NOVEMBER 1: Middleton Parent Feedback Requested.
Thank you to those who have taken a moment to complete the feedback survey regarding biking to school. We have 31 respondents so far.
As a reminder, the ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL section of 2024-2025 Student/Family Handbook (page 15 in the print version of the Handbook) states that Middleton students are not permitted to ride their bicycles to and from school. Students may begin riding bikes to school when they attend McCracken. We have received questions about this policy from staff and students. One step we are taking in reviewing this policy is to invite feedback from parents. If you would like to provide feedback on Middleton’s bike policy, you may do so by completing this Middleton Bike Survey form.
The survey will close at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, November 1.

The amazing Symphonic and Concert Bands and McCracken Choirs performed during the month of October! Over the last few weeks, our McCracken band and choir students participated in concert performances at McCracken to celebrate their hard work and effort during the first trimester. Concert performances were amazing with a packed audience attended by students’ families and friends. Special thanks to Mr. Chip DeStefano, Mr. Cesar Mendoza, and Ms. Amy Keipert.
FALL REMINDERS
As a reminder, Skokie 73.5 does not celebrate Halloween at school to be more inclusive and welcoming to all families and ensure all students are able to participate in our planned celebrations. Students may NOT wear costumes of any sort on Halloween. If a student does wear a costume to school, they will be asked to change out of it. This information has been shared with our students at school. We encourage safe trick-or-treating practices after school for our students and families who do celebrate Halloween. Students should travel in groups of two or more, avoid entering any unknown houses, cross the street carefully at intersections, and check treats for safety before eating them. Official trick-or-treat hours in Skokie on Thursday, October 31 are from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m.
FUTURES UNLIMITED
Oakton College’s Futures Unlimited is an annual daylong program that introduces 8th grade female and gender-expansive students to the world of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) – inspiring them to explore new interests and pursue their passions. Students participate in several hands-on labs and sessions throughout the day of the December 17 field trip and lunch is provided. Students who are interested in this field trip to the Oakton College campus should complete this form no later than October 31 to allow for planning. Students have access to this form in the daily announcement slides shared in advisory. Students will be provided with more information in their 8th grade science classrooms.

Equity Mission Statement
WE BELIEVE that inclusivity and belonging is the foundation for equity.
ALL CHILDREN CAN LEARN, at high achievement levels, when equity is infused into every aspect of education.
WE ACKNOWLEDGE the systemic inequities present in school systems and recognize the impact they continue to have on marginalized communities.
WE COMMIT to teaching, learning, and growing in order to identify and dismantle inequitable systems and to create a community where barriers are removed so that everyone can reach their full potential.
WE BELIEVE that students succeed when they can see themselves represented in our staff, curriculum, opportunities, and our shared environment. We accomplish this through professional development, curriculum revision, community engagement, and systems evaluations.
WE RECOGNIZE the need to teach our students to identify the origins of unjust systems and empower them to use their critical thinking skills and agency to responsibly disrupt the policies and practices that perpetuate inequalities.
