DISTRICT NEWS

SUPERINTENDENT'S GREETING

Welcome back!

While you were away, district administration and the Business Office staff were hard at work ordering and cataloging materials to make delivery to the classrooms easy and efficient. I hope our staff were pleased with the way they found their room setups upon their return.

We spent a significant amount of time interviewing amazingly talented people to join our teams. I hope you are able to find time to make sure all new staff experience our welcoming environment, which is one of our district priorities.

Our district administration team was also consumed with designing the professional development calendar for the year, which is aligned with our teaching and learning priorities.

Additionally, the district completed its facilities assessment with FGMA Architects over the summer. We are nearing the end of our space utilization study. FGMA will provide a summary of the work completed and their findings to the Board and community at the Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, September 10. Please join us at the meeting or watch the livestream if possible. The meeting recording will be shared afterward with the entire school community.

We're glad you're here,

Dr. Zipporah Hightower
Superintendent

MEYER NEWS

The 2024-2025 School Year Begins!

Meyer students, families, and staff joined together at Party on the Playground on Thursday, August 15. It was touch-and-go with the weather during the day, but fortunately, the skies cleared and it was a beautiful evening to gather together and celebrate the beginning of the school year!

Student Classroom Visits gave our Shining Stars the opportunity to see their classrooms and drop off supplies on Wednesday, August 21. There was a lot of positive energy and enthusiasm back in the building.

Thank you to all the families who were able to attend these events.

WELCOME KINDERGARTENERS!

We had a wonderful first day of school with our kindergartners on Thursday, August 22. All Meyer staff were on hand to provide extra support for all of our kindergarten classrooms. We look forward to our first day with our preschool students on Monday, August 26.

Welcome to Kindergarten

Due to staffing limitations, we are not able to provide childcare during the event for children without a reservation.

See this FLYER for details. We look forward to seeing you there!

FALL ASSESSMENTS

ABCs on a wooden backgroundEvery year in the fall we use formal assessments to understand students’ early reading and math skills. This information helps teachers plan lessons, identify students who need extra help, and monitor student growth. These assessments are conducted one-on-one with a teacher. We will be assessing our Kindergarten students in early literacy and math skills, for teaching and learning purposes, from September 3-11. For more information about assessments we use in the district for each grade level, please visit www.sd735.org/cia/assessments. If you have questions about these assessments, please contact your child’s teacher or our school psychologist, Dr. Kristen McCann, at [email protected]. Thank you for your continued support and partnership.

MIDDLETON NEWS

Welcome to the 2024-2025 school year, Middleton Bulldogs!

The halls, classrooms, and playground are filled once again with the joyful sounds of our students reconnecting with one another and with staff. The start to the school year has been a smooth one as students adjust to routines and schedules once again. We are thrilled to serve the incredible, diverse community here in Skokie School District 73.5, and are looking forward to a successful year ahead.

During the first week of school, Middleton students participated in:

  • PBIS learning stations to practice how to be “Bulldog Ready” throughout the building. Each grade level rotated through the building, learning and practicing the expectations in the lunchroom, at recess, in the hallways, in the bathrooms, and in the nurse’s office. We are so proud of our 5th graders for their leadership as the oldest and most experienced students at Middleton, our 1st graders for doing a lot of learning together this week as they experience all of the wonderful spaces and people here at Middleton School, and our 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders who also remembered what it means to be a Bulldog. Great job, students!
  • Bus Evacuation Drill to remind ourselves how to be Bulldog Ready on the bus and what to do on a bus in case of an emergency. Students were respectful, responsible, and ready during this opportunity, where they practiced exiting safely out the back of the bus.
  • Morning Meetings to grow their classroom cultures, learn about one another, and share about themselves. Middleton students participate in Morning Meetings daily in their classrooms. Teachers take extra care during this time at the start of the year to build a warm and welcoming classroom environment.

SCHOOL GROUNDS & COURTYARD UPDATES

The Middleton grounds received a face lift for the 2024-25 school year! Over the summer, the landscaping in the front of the building along St. Louis Av. was redone. We look forward to enjoying the front lawn space while the weather is nice. The Middleton Courtyard was also weeded and the path through the pollinator garden was cleaned up. We look forward to opportunities for our students to learn in this unique outdoor space!

BENCHMARK ASSESSMENTS

Middleton students will be participating in benchmark assessments three times per year (fall, winter, and spring). Over the next two weeks, students will have the opportunity to show us what they know by doing their best on a variety of assessments. Students will complete FastBridge Reading testing on Monday, August 26; Friday, August 30; or Tuesday, September 3. They will complete the MAP test for Reading and Math on Wednesday, August 28 and Thursday, August 29. FastBridge Math testing will be completed in homeroom classrooms before September 11.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS

McNALLY PARK: Please be mindful that there are no dogs allowed on or around McNally Park during school hours. Additionally, while school is in session, McNally Park is closed to members of the community. Before and after school hours, the playground is open to all. This is to ensure student safety. We thank you for your cooperation.

BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL: In the morning, supervision of students begins at 8:15 a.m. Students may enter at 8:15 a.m at Door 4 if they would like school breakfast. Students may begin entering the building when the first bell rings at 8:25 a.m., and the second bell indicating the start of the school day is at 8:30 a.m. As a reminder, students are dismissed at 3:00 p.m. every day except Tuesdays, when they are dismissed at 2:00 p.m.

CURRICULUM NIGHT EVENT

Middleton Curriculum Night is scheduled in person for Wednesday, September 4 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Families will have the opportunity to come to Middleton, hear from the administrative team, and visit teachers in classrooms. Teachers and staff look forward to sharing important information about the grade level and classroom, and forming positive partnerships to support your child’s academic, social, and emotional learning and growth. More information will be shared with families about this event next week.

WHITE PINES INFORMATION NIGHT

Champ the Bulldog gets ready for White PinesFamilies of 5th grade students are invited to attend an informational meeting about the 5th grade White Pines overnight trip. Join us immediately before Curriculum Night on Wednesday, September 5 from 6:00 to 6:30 p.m. The White Pines trip is scheduled for Wednesday, October 23 through Friday, October 25.

MIDDLETON GRANDFRIENDS

Middleton's Grandfriend's Program seeks to foster meaningful connections between our students and community members by bringing the generations together. Through storytelling, shared experiences, and mentorship, we aim to create a supportive and nurturing environment where students can learn and grow with the guidance of their grandfriends. We believe in the value of intergenerational relationships and the unique wisdom and compassion that community members can offer. Our mission is to enrich the lives of both our students and volunteers, building a stronger, more connected community. Email Joanna Szalewski at [email protected] or Kim Scurek at [email protected] if you wish to volunteer with students and support classroom needs.

McCRACKEN NEWS

Greetings and Welcome!

A heartfelt welcome to our students and families to a brand new 2024-2025 school year at McCracken Middle School! We are fortunate to continue to serve the students, staff, and families in our wonderfully diverse Skokie 73.5 community! Our students experienced a smooth start to the school year getting reacquainted with classmates and the school environment. We have had a tremendous start to the school year and are looking forward to a successful year ahead. Go Hornets!

During the first week of school, McCracken students participated in:

  • A welcome assembly that highlighted the importance of creating a welcoming, safe school environment with equitable learning experiences to maximize growth and achievement. Students enjoyed a special guest speaker, Caden Vittorini, who is the CEO and Founder of the Vitt Factor. Vittorini specializes in motivational speaking that shares strong messages about students believing in themselves, forming positive connections with peers, reaching their full potential, and unity.
  • Advisory programming that included orientation to the new school year, advisory team building activities, and a review of the Student/Family Handbook.
  • A comprehensive review of social and emotional support services and resources available to students at McCracken.
  • PBIS learning stations to practice the “Buzz Behavior” expectations we have throughout our building, which allow students to be successful this year! We added a new rotation facilitated by administration focused on student behavior, anti-bullying, and anti-hate speech. The presentation outlined the importance of respect, tolerance, and inclusion and provided a clear understanding of the consequences of engaging in this behavior whether at school or home.

SCHOOL GARDEN & GROUNDS UPDATE

The McCracken Garden is receiving a face lift for the 2024-2025 school year! Over the summer, Carrie Eccleston worked with the Buildings & Grounds team to design a new garden space to complement the updated grounds. Eleven large raised beds and eight small raised beds will be added to the former garden area. The McCracken Garden Club will meet on Wednesdays after school in the fall to plant a small fall vegetable garden and add in spring perennials. In the spring of 2025, an international garden featuring many different foods from around the world will be installed. If you are interested in helping out as a gardener, volunteer, or have ideas about different vegetables and fruit to plant, please reach out to Ms. Eccleston at [email protected]. We are so excited to partner with the community to see what we can grow!

Check out the new and improved landscaping in the front of McCracken Middle School next to the updated garden. Our Buildings and Grounds team removed the old bushes and replaced them with a beautiful variety of plants to brighten up our school grounds.

EXTRACURRICULAR PROGRAMMING

McCracken is proud to offer a variety of student athletic and enrichment programs. These programs allow students to exercise their strengths, tackle areas for growth, and socialize with peers. Be sure to sign your student up for one of McCracken's great extracurricular clubs or activities! Review the McCracken Extracurricular Activities 2024-2025 Slideshow (with videos and important links) and our After School Programs brochure for information, registration links, and the payment link (for a small number of activities).

Remember to check with the nurse to be sure we have a copy of your student's current physical and athletic permit form, which are required for tryouts. Students will not be allowed to participate in tryouts without all of the required forms submitted. School nurses will also accept an Illinois state physical form or sports physical form, both of which are available through a physician. Please review the required health forms on our website’s Health Services page. Payment should be submitted to school offices after tryouts.

BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL REMINDERS

In the morning, students may enter the building between 7:30 and 7:40 a.m. through the main entrance to purchase breakfast in the cafeteria or report to the Learning Center. Students are discouraged from arriving prior to 7:30 a.m. unless they have a scheduled activity to attend. Outside student supervision begins at 7:30 a.m. At 7:50 a.m., all students may go to their lockers and proceed to their Advisory class. School starts at 8:00 a.m. In the afternoon, students are dismissed at 3:00 p.m. except for Tuesdays, when they are dismissed at 2:00 p.m. The Learning Center is open on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays until 3:55 p.m.

CURRICULUM INFORMATION EVENT

The McCracken Curriculum Information program is scheduled on Thursday, September 5 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Families will have the opportunity to come to McCracken to view administrative and grade level presentations from advisory and content area teachers. Some of the topics reviewed will include team practices, contact information, curriculum guidelines, grading practices, and academic support available for students at McCracken. Teachers and staff look forward to sharing important information with families and forming positive partnerships to support their child’s academic and social and emotional learning and growth. More information will be shared with families about this event next week.

NO PLACE FOR HATE

Last year, McCracken made a commitment to nurturing a positive environment through ADL's "No Place for Hate" program, earning our school an official designation from the organization. This empowering initiative harnesses student involvement to promote inclusivity, respect, and allyship and celebrates our dedication to strengthening our school community.

District Priorities

WELCOMING ENVIRONMENT. We will welcome and engage staff, students, families and community members in our schools.

HIRING & RETENTION. We will recruit, hire, and retain a diverse workforce and improve our human resource processes, procedures, and materials.

INFRASTRUCTURE & FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY. All financial decisions and investments will meet the needs of our diverse learners and staff and promote academic and social growth. We will provide a safe, inclusive, flexible, and innovative space for teaching, learning, and growing.

TEACHING & LEARNING. All students will engage in learning experiences that are cohesive and articulated across PreK-8, flexibly designed to engage all learners and leading to rigorous outcomes for all. We will be a future-focused, real-world learning environment that is responsive, accessible, and meaningful for all. We will become a model district on the use of data for making instructional, curriculum, and programmatic decisions.

Equity Mission Statement

WE BELIEVE that inclusivity and belonging is the foundation for equity.

ALL CHILDREN CAN LEARN, at high achievement levels, when equity is infused into every aspect of education.

WE ACKNOWLEDGE the systemic inequities present in school systems and recognize the impact they continue to have on marginalized communities.

WE COMMIT to teaching, learning, and growing in order to identify and dismantle inequitable systems and to create a community where barriers are removed so that everyone can reach their full potential.

WE BELIEVE that students succeed when they can see themselves represented in our staff, curriculum, opportunities, and our shared environment. We accomplish this through professional development, curriculum revision, community engagement, and systems evaluations.

WE RECOGNIZE the need to teach our students to identify the origins of unjust systems and empower them to use their critical thinking skills and agency to responsibly disrupt the policies and practices that perpetuate inequalities.
