PBIS FAMILY CONNECTION: BEING KIND
This week we are working on “Being Kind - Using kind words, greeting others, and saying ‘hello.’” We use kind words to make others feel happy, loved, and welcomed. At school we practice giving compliments and encouragement. Compliments are nice words to others about things they’re doing (building, drawing, following MAC rules, etc.) or how they look (“I like your shirt,” “Your hair looks nice today.”) Words of encouragement include, “You tried your best” or “You can do it.” If a friend is sad, using kind words can help that friend feel better. Saying “please” and “thank you,” as well as greeting one another and saying “hello,” are all kind ways to help people feel welcomed.
At home, encourage your child to say “please” and “thank you.” Practice giving each other compliments: “You cooked a great dinner tonight” or “Thanks for cleaning up your room” or “You shared your toy with your sister. That was so kind.” To help your child learn about being kind, you can watch these videos together: It's Great to Be Kind and/or Try a Little Kindness.
MEYER SUPERSTARS

MEYER DATES
Thank you to the families who came out on Thursday for our Cozy Family Reading Night! We hope you enjoyed the literacy focused activities and book swap! Special shout out to the PTO for providing the popcorn, and to all of the staff who made the event possible and spent the evening together!
MADISON AVENUE DROP-OFF & PICKUP
Please remember that Madison Avenue is one way westbound between Saint Louis and Central Park from the hours of 7:45 to 8:45 a.m. and 1:45 to 3:15 p.m. on school days. Please continue to help us keep staff and students safe at drop off and pick up times by abiding by this traffic flow, which is posted on Village signs on the street. Thank you!
WHEN YOU STOP BY...
Just a reminder that when you ring the bell at the main entrance, Heather Rubio or Sarah Cardenas in our front office will greet you, ask you your name, and what you are here for. Please understand that this is a step to ensure safety, and we greatly appreciate your understanding and patience.
PBIS FAMILY CONNECTIONS: KIND WORDS
Words carry a lot of power, and one thing we are working on as a whole school is to be mindful of what we say, and how it impacts others. Books can be a powerful tool for developing understanding in this area, and for building empathy skills for those who are different that ourselves. Bonus points for the connection that can come from reading them together with your child and talking about them! Consider checking out some of these books from Skokie Public Library, with themes that touch on the power of our words:
FOR YOUNGER READERS
- Big by Vashti Harrison
- Enemy Pie by Derek Munson
- If You Plant a Seed by Kadir Nelson
- Stick and Stone by Beth Ferry
FOR OLDER READERS
- Posted by John David Anderson
FOR ALL READERS
- Each Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson
- I Walk With Vanessa by Kerascoët

Families in need of outerwear for their child should contact school administration for additional resources.

Equity Mission Statement
WE BELIEVE that inclusivity and belonging is the foundation for equity.
ALL CHILDREN CAN LEARN, at high achievement levels, when equity is infused into every aspect of education.
WE ACKNOWLEDGE the systemic inequities present in school systems and recognize the impact they continue to have on marginalized communities.
WE COMMIT to teaching, learning, and growing in order to identify and dismantle inequitable systems and to create a community where barriers are removed so that everyone can reach their full potential.
WE BELIEVE that students succeed when they can see themselves represented in our staff, curriculum, opportunities, and our shared environment. We accomplish this through professional development, curriculum revision, community engagement, and systems evaluations.
WE RECOGNIZE the need to teach our students to identify the origins of unjust systems and empower them to use their critical thinking skills and agency to responsibly disrupt the policies and practices that perpetuate inequalities.
